Zebralette Easy Spectral Synth

By U-he (Heckmann Audio GmbH)

Zebralette

Zebralette is u-he’s deceptively powerful free synthesizer, designed as both a standalone instrument and a gateway into the deeper world of Zebra2.

Built around a single Zebra oscillator, it proves that one well-designed sound engine can go far beyond basic synthesis, offering advanced spectral shaping, rich modulation and serious musical depth in a compact, approachable package.

System Requirements:

One Oscillator, Deep Spectral Power

At first glance, Zebralette looks minimal. Under the hood, however, it uses the same advanced oscillator technology found in Zebra2. The core oscillator is built around a 16-slot waveset, allowing you to scan, morph and blend between multiple waveforms in real time.

This is not simple wavetable synthesis. Zebralette’s oscillator supports both geometric and spectral waveform creation, letting you draw shapes directly or define harmonic content with extreme precision.

Four waveform editing modes shape how sound evolves over time. GeoMorph and GeoBlend focus on time-domain waveform shapes, while SpectroMorph and SpectroBlend work directly in the frequency domain across up to 128 harmonics.

Combined with the WaveWarp control and modulation sources, this setup allows evolving textures, animated timbres and harmonically rich tones that would normally require far more complex synth architectures.

To extend the oscillator even further, Zebralette includes 24 spectral effects. These go well beyond traditional filters, offering sync-style transformations, phase distortion, harmonic scattering and other spectral processes that reshape sound at its core rather than simply filtering it.

Musical Modulation and Practical Sound Design

Zebralette pairs its oscillator with a focused but flexible modulation system. Two LFOs, one global and one per voice, work alongside a classic ADSR envelope and a powerful 32-stage MSEG for complex time-based modulation.

Velocity, key follow, mod wheel, pressure and polyphonic aftertouch are all available as modulation sources, making Zebralette highly responsive to performance input.

Unison-style oscillator stacking expands the sound dramatically, with modes ranging from subtle stereo widening to dense multi-voice “superwave” textures.

Unlike traditional supersaw designs, Zebralette’s stacking works with any waveform, making it equally effective for pads, basses, leads and experimental sound design.

A compact but effective effects section rounds out the instrument, with chorus or phaser, EQ and delay integrated directly into the signal path.

The interface remains clean and scalable, MIDI learn is supported throughout, and presets created in Zebralette can be loaded directly into Zebra2, making it a practical stepping stone rather than a dead-end tool.

FAQ

No. While it introduces Zebra’s oscillator, Zebralette is a fully functional synth capable of professional sound design on its own.

It uses spectral synthesis combined with waveform morphing, blending and harmonic processing.

Yes. Zebralette presets can be opened directly in Zebra2, making it ideal for learning and later expanding projects.

Absolutely. Its evolving textures, unison modes and spectral effects work well for techno, house, ambient, bass music and experimental styles.

Yes. It supports velocity, mod wheel, pressure, key follow and polyphonic aftertouch for expressive performance.
