Tyrell N6

Tyrell N6 is a free virtual analog synthesizer from u-he, built on a hardware concept that never reached production but evolved into a focused, characterful software instrument.

Compact, fast, and unapologetically hands-on, Tyrell N6 delivers classic analog tone with a modern software backbone, making it a long-standing favorite among producers who value immediacy, musicality, and zero menu diving.

System Requirements:

From Unreleased Hardware to Freeware Classic

Tyrell N6 began life as a proposed hardware synth concept developed with Amazona.de, intended to offer a streamlined analog-style instrument without unnecessary complexity.

When the hardware project stalled, u-he stepped in, repurposing ideas and early Diva-era technology into a dedicated software synth engine. The result was Tyrell N6: a virtual analog instrument that stays true to the original hardware mindset, with every major function accessible from a single panel.

The architecture is intentionally familiar. Two main oscillators are joined by noise, ring modulation, and feedback paths, feeding into a twin filter design derived from u-he’s early Diva filter models.

The signal flow encourages classic subtractive synthesis techniques while offering subtle extensions such as filter feedback and oscillator overdrive that push the sound into richer, more aggressive territory when needed.

Modern Updates, Vintage Workflow

The 2025 beta marks a significant technical refresh while preserving Tyrell’s original workflow. Support for CLAP, native Apple Silicon, improved VST3 behavior, and a modern preset browser bring the synth firmly into contemporary DAW environments.

Under the hood, performance and GUI responsiveness have been improved, and the factory preset library has been refined to better showcase Tyrell’s strengths across basses, leads, pads, and classic polysynth textures.

Despite these updates, Tyrell N6 remains deliberately simple to use. There are no hidden panels, no deep modulation pages, and no layered UI modes.

Two LFOs, loopable ADSR envelopes, a compact modulation matrix, and a built-in chorus provide just enough flexibility to cover a wide range of musical tasks without slowing down the creative process.

The result is a synth that feels closer to working with vintage hardware than a modern “everything at once” soft synth.

Key Features:

A focused virtual analog synthesizer designed for speed, character, and classic tone.

FAQ

Tyrell N6 shares some early design DNA with Diva but is far more streamlined. Diva focuses on detailed component modeling and deep configurability, while Tyrell prioritizes speed, simplicity, and a fixed signal path inspired by classic hardware.

Tyrell excels at classic analog roles: basses, leads, arps, and pads. It works particularly well in house, techno, synthwave, electro, and pop, but its clean fundamentals make it useful in almost any genre.

Yes. The 2025 beta adds support for MTS-ESP microtuning on macOS, Windows, and Linux, making it suitable for alternative tuning systems and experimental work

No. Compared to many modern analog-modeling synths, Tyrell N6 is lightweight and efficient, making it practical for large projects or live use.r.

The 2025 beta is an intermediate step toward future updates, including a planned graphical overhaul and potential additions like MPE and polyphonic parameter modulation in CLAP hosts.
