Zebralette 3

Zebralette 3 is not a teaser or a cut-down novelty. It is the beating heart of the upcoming Zebra 3, released for free and powerful enough to stand on its own as a serious sound design instrument.

Built around a single oscillator, Zebralette 3 proves that limitations on paper mean nothing when the underlying engine is this deep, flexible and musical.

At first glance it looks clean and approachable, but spend a few minutes inside the oscillator and curve editors and it becomes clear this is a synth designed for people who enjoy sculpting sound at a microscopic level.

From evolving pads and physical-style plucks to complex harmonic motion that would normally require modular systems, Zebralette 3 rewards curiosity and experimentation without ever feeling hostile or over-engineered.

System Requirements:

A next-generation spectral oscillator

The core of Zebralette 3 is its fully featured spectral oscillator, capable of operating in wavetable or additive modes.

Instead of relying on static frames, the oscillator uses vector-based curves that morph smoothly between shapes, resulting in fluid, organic motion without stepping or aliasing artifacts. Waveforms can be drawn directly using spline curves, Bézier handles, freehand tools and warping operations.

Crucially, those same curves can represent either waveform geometry or harmonic spectra, allowing you to design sound by drawing time-domain shapes or by sculpting partials across the frequency range.

Two serial oscillator FX blocks further expand the palette with spectral decay, phase distortion, filtering, warping and animation effects that operate directly at the sound source.

Modulation built for movement and evolution

Zebralette 3 pairs its oscillator with an exceptionally powerful modulation system. Alongside a classic ADSR envelope and two flexible LFOs, the MSEG editor allows you to draw complex multi-stage modulation curves and morph between up to seven different shapes.

These curves can loop, snap to rhythmic grids or act as step sequencers, opening the door to constantly evolving motion without relying on automation lanes.

The modulation matrix ties everything together with clear routing, depth control and modifiers such as quantisation, slew and sample-and-hold.

Despite the depth on offer, the interface remains readable and inviting, making Zebralette 3 equally suitable for beginners learning synthesis and experienced sound designers chasing detail and nuance.

FAQ

Not exactly. While it serves as a preview of the Zebra 3 engine, it isn't "crippled." You get one full-power spectral oscillator that is actually more advanced than the oscillators in 90% of paid synths on the market. It's a specialized sound design tool, not just a demo.

Zebralette 3 uses Spectral FX instead of traditional analog-modeled filters. Because it's a spectral synth, you can "sculpt" the harmonics directly. Using the "Spectral Distortion" or "Filter" modes within the oscillator FX slots allows for sweeps that are cleaner and more surgically precise than a standard ladder filter.

es, and it’s arguably one of the best tools for it. You can draw complex shapes using Bézier curves and vector splines, then export the result as a .wav wavetable. It’s perfect for creating high-resolution, aliasing-free tables that you can carry over to your other favorite synths.

Most wavetable synths work like "Photoshop" they use pixels (samples) that can get blurry or "alias" when stretched. Zebralette 3 works like "Adobe Illustrator" it uses math-based curves (splines). This means your waveforms stay perfectly crisp and smooth no matter how much you warp or morph them.

Yes. The engine has been rebuilt from the ground up. The modulation system, the way it handles additive synthesis, and the new MSEG (Multi-Stage Envelope Generator) are massive leaps forward in terms of flexibility and audio quality. It’s a completely different beast under the hood.
