Oi, Grandad!

by Modular Samples

Oi, Grandad! VST

Oi, Grandad! is a four-voice granular synthesiser that embraces experimental sound design while nodding to modular synthesis and deliberately relaxed DAW workflows.

It’s the kind of instrument that encourages long sessions of exploration rather than precision programming, rewarding hands-on tweaking with evolving textures, drones, and unpredictable rhythmic movement.

Equal parts playful and powerful, it feels purpose-built for producers who enjoy letting a patch breathe and mutate over time rather than locking everything rigidly to the grid.

System Requirements:

Four-voice granular engine with modular thinking

At its core, Oi, Grandad! is built around four independent granular voices, each capable of operating as its own sound generator.

Every voice features detailed grain controls, delay processing, and multiple playback modes including round-robin and crossfade, making it easy to build layered, constantly shifting soundscapes.

A dedicated Drone button allows voices to sustain indefinitely, ideal for ambient beds, evolving pads, or experimental textures that sit underneath a track.

Version 2 significantly deepens the engine by introducing four playheads per voice, giving you multiple granular read positions at once.

This transforms static samples into complex, animated sound sources, especially when combined with tracking modulation and pitch quantisation options.

Expanded modulation and resonant character in v2

Oi, Grandad! v2 brings a major upgrade to modulation and signal flow. There are now 12 independently triggered complex modulation sources, including multistage modulators that allow envelopes to evolve in clearly defined phases.

Modulation is visual, hands-on, and designed to encourage experimentation rather than surgical control. A standout addition in version 2 is the per-voice waveguide resonator, which adds physical-modelled resonance and tonal body to granular material.

This makes it possible to push beyond abstract noise textures into playable, almost acoustic-leaning tones.

The updated interface introduces a Master Control page, offering fast access to key parameters across all voices, along with clearer visual feedback such as LED indicators for round-robin behaviour.

Stability and workflow have also been improved, with smoother crossfades, reliable modulation controls, and strong preset compatibility with version 1.

Key Features:

A four-voice granular powerhouse that channels the chaotic energy of a modular rig and those unapologetically “lazy” DAW workflows we all secretly love.

FAQ

While it excels at ambient and textural work, the modulation system and round-robin modes make it very capable of rhythmic and semi-sequenced material.

It’s intentionally musical rather than clinical. You won’t find microscopic parameter lists, but you will get fast, expressive control over movement and density.

Yes. Each voice has its own granular engine, delay, resonator, and modulation, making layered or contrasting textures easy to build.

Performance is generally solid, but using all four voices with multiple playheads and modulation can increase CPU usage, especially at higher quality settings.

Approximately 80% of version 1 presets are compatible, making it easy to carry older ideas forward.
